Blood on the Horns The Long Strange Ride of Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls eBook Roland Lazenby Reviews
I read the first chapters of the book from a friend who loaned it to me. Sorry but the price was right. It provides a more real version of the inner workings of the Bulls situation when they won the titles. If you're caught up with Jordan being perfect, well, you may not want to read this book. Jordan is no question a superb basketball player; one of the best. But basically he loves himself a bit too much, was a total jerk, had little respect for his bosses, was very demeaning to Krause and his fellow teammates, etc. Jordan did a great job in dealing with the media to get them on his side and hence, he was successful in making himself extremely influential to the public and using that to destroy those such as Krause who he didn't like. Apparently MJ still harvests a hate against Krause as he made another stab at him when MJ got into the hall of fame a few years ago. Jackson was the master coach who is great in coaching inflated egos of big stars but was mostly hands off in the inner workings of the players' relationship with their owners and bosses. Many had hoped he would be the go between to maintain balance between management and the players. Krause is the GM who put the team together and made excellent trades to improve the team to ensure they can compete with the changes from other teams. He was very effective in getting the perfect coach for MJ and in recruiting excellent supporting players. And there's the unsung master Tex Winter who created the triangle offense that allowed MJ and later Kobe to excel. So how did the Bulls become so successful in the 90's? Many would say it's because of MJ. It's actually a combination of things such as Krause finding the right coach and players; Jackson as a great coach; Tex with his very effective triangle offense; of course MJ who is so naturally talented; Pippen who is a superstar in his own right; and the supporting players who did their part on the court and just as important allowed MJ to ridicule them individually but didn't make it a big deal. The interviews in the book were excellent as they provided a more factual basis for what really happened. It's a great read if you enjoyed the NBA Bulls during the 90's and prefer a less biased discussion of it. Again, if you're a die hard MJ fan, then you may want to pass in reading this book. But if you want to take a peep past the mask of what we see and hear via the media, then this book is a very good one. I always find it interesting to read about how things really are.
Really interesting read with great insight to the struggle within one of the all time great dynasties in sports history.
One of the best sports books ever written. Lazenby brings them all up close and personal. Couldn't put it down.
Great read. Very interesting to go behind the scenes of one of the top teams in nba recent history.
Definitely recommend this book
Thoroughly enjoyed getting my first glimpse into the personalities, mechanics and politics in both the nba and the Chicago bulls.
